What you do the first thing in the morning can make or break the rest of the day. Begin poorly and the hours can grind by leaving you frustrated and unable to perform at your best. A good start, however, can help keep you on top at work, and at home. We are at our most relaxed when we wake, therefore, it makes sense to use this time to build an optimistic approach to the rest of the day. The following 3 quick steps will have you clear minded and focused before breakfast and help you physically and mentally prepare to face the whatever the day may hold.
The moment you wake, take five minutes to meditate. Lie back, close your eyes and just concentrate on breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. During this time try to think about…nothing! You don’t need a personal guru or burning incense to reap the benefits of meditation. You will feel calm, yet refreshed. Teaching your mind to relax through repeated meditation is a skill that rewards you with a greater sense of relaxation throughout the rest of the day.
2) Drink a glass of water
That’s right, before gulping back your first double espresso or making a freshly squeezed breakfast juice, drink a full glass of water. Water will help rehydrate your body from sleep, flush out toxins and provide an important boost to your brain. Your brain is made up of about 75% water, so it’s only natural starting the day with a glass of H2O will have you thinking clear and sharp.
Stretching helps improve circulation, warms up muscles, increases blood flow to the brain and even releases feel-good endorphins. Completing a five-minute stretching routine will not only wake up your brain, but many studies have shown stretching exercises increase both the production and release of serotonin–the feel-good hormone. Common stretches to include are neck, lower and upper back, shoulders, and legs.
Following these easy steps will leave you feeling refreshed, focused and with a sense of accomplishment–all before getting into the shower!
